Calling all aspiring Mandopop songwriters - SG:SW returns with a digital edition, submissions now open

Singapore's annual Mandopop Songwriting Festival SG:SW I Write The Songs will go fully digital in their upcoming 2020 edition.

Established in 2017, SG:SW has become as platform to spotlight aspiring Mandopop artists and support their foray into Singapore's music scene. Some Mandpop artists who have gained presence in the local scene through previous editions of SG:SW include Irwin (阿Win), Zeeaura洪至慧, Novabelle 吳詠賢, Zuo En 張祚恩, See Kai Zheng 施凯证, and more.

With the festival still pushing through despite restrictions on live performances, fans of local Mandopop as well as aspiring songwriters can look forward to a plethora of online masterclasses and showcase performances like no other. Pre-recorded performances will take place on SG:SW's Facebook page, while masterclasses will take place over video conferencing platforms.

Organisers Composers & Authors Society of Singapore (COMPASS), Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre, and Ocean Butterflies Music hope that with online coverage, the festival would be able to extend their reach beyond festival participants and inspire non-festival songwriting enthusiasts to learn and appreciate the performances as well.

Submissions open from today, 27 July, till 30 August 2020 and the criteria is as follows:

  • Singapore Citizens, Permanent Residents or foreigners living in Singapore with a valid student, work visa or long-term visiting pass whom are aged 15 years old and above
  • The original songs submitted can be songs written by individuals or as a group (with consent from all songwriters involved
  • Entrants may submit multiple songs, with a maximum of 3 sets of lyrics and 3 sets of melody composition associated with each songwriter, regardless if the songs were submitted by themselves or other entrants. 

Following the submission process, 20 song entries will be selected to be showcased on Facebook live, in which the song will be performed in a recorded video and judged by industry professionals. The chosen 10 submissions will then move on to the next stage of online masterclasses, ultimately having the opportunity to perform at the online finale concert on 17 and 18 October 2020.

This year's masterclass mentors will include local Mandpop pioneers Lee Si Song and Billy Koh. Renowned for composing many popular hits and collaborating with the likes of Jacky Cheung, Jolin Tsai, Lee is also the mentor of Stefanie Sun. Koh, on the other hand, produced over 100 albums and mentored JJ Lin, Kit Chan, A-do, and BY2.
