Singaporean electronic artist Jasmine Sokko, signed to Warner Music Singapore, has won the Best Southeast Asia Act award at the 2019 MTV EMA. This marks a historical moment as she becomes the first Singaporean act to win an MTV EMA award.
She has emerged as the fan-favourite in the category ahead of other nominees including Jannine Weigel (Thailand), Moira Dela Torre (Philippines), Rich Brian (Indonesia), Yuna (Malaysia) and Suboi (Vietnam). This announcement came ahead of the award ceremony which is held on November 4, 2019 at Seville, Spain at FIBES Conference & Exhibition Centre with Sokko in attendance.
While expressing her gratitude for her fans, label, and MTV, Sokko also said, "Sometimes I look back and can’t believe how much has happened in the past year. I always believe that it's important to challenge the status quo. Just because nobody has done something before, doesn't mean it's not possible. The past year has made me foresee a future in the Singapore music scene that I want to be a part of building. May the ceiling of mine today be the floor of tomorrow's generation".
Sokko made her debut in 2016 with '1057' and in 2018, she signed to Warner Music Singapore and has since released two chart-topping singles 'Hurt' and 'Tired'. Earlier this year, she made her first forray into the China market with her participation in electronic music reality show Rave Now, where she finished in Top 4. In September, she released her first Chinese single 'SHH 噓'.
