Rhyu on love, music, and her debut EP ‘It’s Pouring’

At just 19, Singaporean singer-songwriter Rhyu is making waves with her heartfelt storytelling and soul-stirring vocals. Known for her deep, raspy voice that has drawn comparisons to Icelandic musician Laufey—who even noticed her on TikTok—Rhyu has quickly become one of the country’s most exciting emerging artists. With over 83,000 monthly Spotify listeners and a growing catalog of emotionally rich songs, she has already performed at the iconic Esplanade and opened for Taiwanese instrumental band Cicada. Now, she’s stepping into a new chapter with It’s Pouring.

Leading the way is her latest single, ‘For It’s You and Me,’ a tender ode to love’s everyday moments. Released on Valentine’s Day, the track showcases Rhyu’s signature warmth, blending vibrant instrumentals with introspective lyricism. Unlike her previous work, she took a more hands-on approach to production, embracing creative control over her evolving sound. As Rhyu unveils It’s Pouring, she reflects on her journey—from writing songs as a child to becoming a voice of comfort and connection for listeners worldwide. What better way to celebrate her newly released EP than by getting to know Rhyu on a deeper level and uncovering the meaning behind her latest release.

Hi Rhyu! Your new single 'For It's You and Me' captures the warmth of love in everyday moments. Was there a specific moment or experience that sparked the idea for this song?

'For it’s You and Me' was inspired by many little moments, which was also why I wrote it over a couple months, adding in new lyrics whenever I felt the warmth of love.

You mentioned that the "hidden secret" to love isn’t complicated—it’s right in front of us. What’s one small, seemingly ordinary moment in your life that feels like a grand love story to you?

Goodnight texts feel so special to me. It might seem like a small gesture to some, but knowing that my partner thinks of me before falling asleep makes it all the more meaningful.

Your debut EP It’s Pouring is finally out! What’s the story behind the title?

I’ve been dreaming of releasing an EP for three years—since before I even released 'Melt', my first single. I decided on the title It’s Pouring back then, and it has never wavered. I love rainy weather—the way it makes me feel cosy indoors and how its tranquility brings out emotions. Because of this, I often write songs when it rains. My name, 晗雨, also carries elements of rain, translating to “rain before the dawn.” These reasons are why It’s Pouring felt like the perfect title for my debut EP.

What’s one track on the EP that holds a particularly special meaning for you? Can you give us a little hint about its theme?

'Forever Person' is one of my favorite tracks on the EP, inspired by how I felt when my partner told me I was his forever person. As an overthinker, I often get anxious and find myself reevaluating my relationships. This song is especially meaningful to me because I had never felt so certain that someone was my person—so in love and emotionally grounded.

Can you share what it's like being a part of PK Records and how the community there has influenced your music and growth as an artist?

It’s a very fun place to be a part of! Other than being a safe space with amazing people, PK Records also pushes me to grow as an artist as I’m surrounded by other creatives with incredible works.

At just 20, you’ve already built a strong following. How has your perspective on music and success evolved since you first started releasing songs?

At first, I never really thought about achieving "success" in music. I simply wanted to share my music and was happy if it reached anyone at all. However, I’ve come to realize that in such a competitive industry, it’s hard not to care about the numbers—especially when they directly impact whether you can continue pursuing your craft. Still, I define success as staying true to my artistry and never compromising my authenticity just to appeal to the masses.
