Fauxe is easily one of the most prolific and prodigous producers in Singapore at the moment. But even amidst his tremendous discography, Ikhlas stands out as a masterwork. Made up of obscure samples of Hokkien songs, Tamil music, film dialogue and Hawaiian-influenced Malay music - the 2018 album was a time capsule of his creative journey in Malaysia.
The LP's opener 'GAUT' was a particularly memorable cut, offering buoyant and joyous hip-hop twist on traditional Malay sounds. Seven years later, the acclaimed track has been revived by talented director Joant Úbeda, who crafts a wonderful animated music video that proves to be just as phenomenal the song that inspired it.

"Once I heard the song, I knew I had to find a way to collaborate with him [Fauxe]," Úbeda shared on social media. Even with all the fantastical elements, this is simply a journey many of us take, chasing something still unknown in the present, while unfortunately sacrificing the familiar. "
"Also, this was my first time working with animation. And there was definitely a lot to learn but I’m excited to explore the medium in the future," the director adds.
"Lastly, I think now more than ever, I should mention that this entire music video, from script to character design to animation, was entirely human-made," the Sementara filmmaker proclaims. No use of generative AI. And while I’m not entirely against all uses of AI, prioritizing human-made art will always be the right choice."
Other artists who worked on the character design, backgrounds, painting and animation for the music video include Audrey Halim, Fira Razman, いしばし ちはる, Mirza Jaafar, and Irsyad Ishak.
