The Singapore Chinese Music Competition (SCMC) 2024, a prominent event for nurturing Chinese instrumental talent, is slated to begin on 26 November and conclude with a special Prize Winners' concert on 13 December, followed by the Grand Finals and Awards Ceremony on 14 December. Organized by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO), the competition has seen a remarkable 4.6% growth in participation since 2022, with 409 contestants aged 7 to 49 joining this year. Among this year's highlights, SCMC 2024 introduced the new “Music Mentor Award,” which honors instructors guiding at least five students to the competition finals, acknowledging their dedication to fostering musical growth. This year’s competition also celebrates diversity, welcoming two non-Chinese participants from Eurasian and Pan-Asian backgrounds.
Additionally, SCMC 2024 will feature Trials and Tribulations, a newly commissioned erhu concerto by local composer Phang Kok Jun. This piece joins the tradition of specially commissioned works that showcase Singaporean themes and expand the concerto repertoire for Chinese instruments. Previously, Phang composed 'The Courage for Peace', inspired by local war heroine Elizabeth Choy, for the zhongruan senior category.
Tickets for the Prize Winners’ Concert and Grand Finals are priced at S$20, with an Early Bird special offering a “1-for-1” ticket bundle until 25 November. For more details on the event schedule and ticketing, visit SCMC’s official website.
