Prominent local musician weish took the theatre world by storm last year with her wildly successful and critically beloved musical production of Secondary. Now her remarkable work has been recognised by the longest-running accolade in Singaporean theatre - The Straits Times Life Theatre Awards.
Secondary has nabbed a whopping six nominations at the 2025 edition of the ST Life Theatre Awards, the most of any play. The musical was shortlisted in the categories of Best Original Script (for weish), Best Supporting Actor (for Teoh Jun Vinh), Best Supporting Actress (for Rebekah Sangeetha Dorai), Best Director (for Huzir Sulaiman) and Best Costume (for Max Tan).

weish reflected on her musical in our interview with her last year, "I’m not sure I’ll ever fully process it, and I certainly never predicted the scale of the production. Writing a musical at all was never even part of my… life plan? For Checkpoint Theatre to’ve had the faith to pump that much resources into staging Secondary is insane to think about, especially as a new playwright.
Secondary: The Musical was a witty, moving and eye-opening production about Singapore’s education system that was based on weish's own experiences as a literature teacher.
Other music-related highlights from the awards include four nominations for Oliver Chong's Transplant, which combined live actors and puppets alongside sonic design and live musical accompaniment from Vedic metal band Rudra.
