A week filled with jazz activities awaits music lovers at the end of this month.
Organised by the Jazz Association (Singapore) (JASS) and the Jazz Association Singapore Youth Orchestra (JASSYO!), Lion City Jazz Festival 2024 – Dizzying Heights, a "high-level training festival", will be held at the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre from 26 February to 2 March.
As part of the event's programme, key members from the United States' Dizzy Gillespie Big Band will mentor seven budding young local musicians in a series of closed-door rehearsal workshops. Following the sessions, the youth musicians and their mentors will share the stage at a finale concert on the festival's last day.
In an effort to make Lion City Jazz Festival 2024 – Dizzying Heights more inclusive, the event's organisers will be holding educational workshops for jazz lovers, which will feature festival mentors John Lee, Frederix Hendrix, Frank Greene, and Sharel Cassity, and a Jazz Composition Symposium — the first of its kind in Singapore.

Guests can also look forward to catching a live concert featuring members of the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band, JASS' Executive Director and Music Director Jeremy Monteiro, JASS' Senior Music Associate Music Director Weixiang Tan, and JASS' Associate Music Director Chok Kerong in addition to the Lion City Jazz Festival – Dizzying Heights finale concert.
"The Lion City Jazz Festival 2024 – Dizzying Heights is a unique high-level training festival where we invite renowned and professional jazz musicians to Singapore to train our local youth jazz musicians. This year, we are extremely honoured to have been able to invite members of the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band, including John Lee. John Lee is currently the leader of the band and will serve as our Chief Mentor." said Monteiro.
"Together with other members of the band, they will mentor our local youth jazz musicians on being a musician in a big band. This one-
week of intense training will culminate in a concert featuring the mentors and our local youth musicians where they will be performing repertoire from the Dizzy Gillespie songbook,” he continued.
