Nosedive bends nostalgia and melody in their rise to prominence

Formed in 2022, Nosedive is a dynamic four-piece shoegaze band from Singapore that has swiftly carved a niche in the alternative rock scene. Their music uniquely blends dreamy male-female vocals with coming-of-age lyrics, creating a soundscape that juxtaposes shimmering verses against powerful, melodic choruses. Drawing inspiration from bands like The Smashing Pumpkins and LSD and the Search for God, Nosedive crafts poetic yet straightforward songs that resonate with a wide audience.

In a short span, Nosedive has achieved significant milestones, including supporting Malaysia's Soft Soft Pillow and performing at prominent venues like Phil Studio. Their recent Indonesian tour, Nosedive ke Nusantara, further showcased their rising prominence in the regional music scene. With a commitment to evolving their sound and exploring new musical landscapes, Nosedive continues to captivate audiences, both locally and internationally.

Fun fact, Aqilah, the band's frontwoman recently competed in Mediacorp's reality singing competion, I Can See Your Voice and even winning the grand prize of $10,000. Obviously, we couldn’t pass up the chance to interview the band about their tour experience and Aqilah’s journey on the singing competition.

Nosedive Ke Nusantara

Hey guys! Congratulations on finishing your Indonesia tour! How did the idea for Nosedive ke Nusantara come about, and what inspired the tour’s name?

Our dream has always been to go on tour, and sticking to being DIY, we decided to organise it on our own. Of course with the help of our lovely friends in Indonesia, we managed to play in 4 cities. The name “Ke Nusantara” came quite naturally from Matiin who is a history student.

Fans in Indonesia are known for their energy and love for music. What was it like connecting with them, and did they surprise you in any way?

The Indonesian indie scene surprised us! We didn’t expect them to crowdsurf and mosh to our songs, and their energy let us have fun too. We loved talking to them and it made us feel welcomed. We got to learn about their local music scene, and they were so genuine in recommending some of their favorite local artists to us.

Were there any local artists or bands you had the chance to meet or possibly want to collaborate with during the tour?

We got to meet so many cool people from bands it’s hard to say them all but notable ones would be Ocean Indiego from Batam (shoegaze), Coonversation Without Talk from Jakarta (midwest emo), Seaside (dream pop/shoegaze) Mountain Moves from Bandung (twee pop), Nood Kink(indie rock) from Jogja and meeting Made from Sunlotus in Jogja (shoegaze) after opening for them in Johor Bahru on their tour!  We also got to collaborate with Pelatar Live, indonesia’s very own audiotree, to shoot a live session which will be up on youtube. We were quite nervous but the team was very friendly and professional!

I Can See Your Voice

Congratulations Indie Chick on your win! What was going through your mind when you found out you’d won the $10,000 prize?

I was in complete disbelief, and many have pointed out how I kept a straight face throughout the entire episode, even when I won! It just did not sink in until way after.

What motivated you to join I Can Hear Your Voice, and how did it feel to showcase your talent in a different setting from Nosedive?

l’m not one to say no to a challenge, and I felt it would be interesting to explore it by myself, in a way without “hiding” behind my instrument and my band. I felt kind of vulnerable even though I was acting with a persona.

Did being part of a band give you an edge in any way, or was it a completely different experience from performing with Nosedive?

Seeing the capabilities of the other contestants made me nervous because they’re so good and they had such stand-out personas. It’s different because I was alone on stage and I couldn’t rely on my bandmates like how I usually would if I was nervous.

Winning the show is a big achievement! How do you see this impacting your career, both as a solo artist and as part of Nosedive?

I’d say we’re still very much unknown, so I hope our music can reach and be enjoyed by the general public too.

Nosedive’s collabs and future

Sun Cell and Nosedive recently had a collaboration released, how did it even come about?

In May 2024, we received a DM from Daryl about collaborating on his upcoming album. This took us by complete surprise because we’re huge Sun Cell fans. In fact, we were at one of his first shows back in 2022, where he performed alongside Saints Among Sinners, Carpet Golf, and Rene. When he reached out to us, we couldn’t believe it. We were more than happy not only to collaborate with him on a song but also to learn about his creative process, as this was our first time working with another artist.

Would you ever consider releasing a bilingual or multilingual track, especially after your Indonesian tour?

We definitely want to write a song in Malay, and would love to collaborate with an Indonesian band on it. No concrete plans yet though.

What’s next for Nosedive? Are there plans for new singles, an EP, or even a full-length album?

We are currently focusing on writing our first album. We want to make it good, and we can’t wait to share with everyone!
