This past April, Checkpoint Theatre made waves with their tremendously successful production of Secondary: The Musical. Written and composed by multidisciplinary artist weish and directed by Huzir Sulaiman, the musical garnered rave review from both fans and critics.
"An effortless script captures the casual nature of how students talk without sounding cringey. Matched with a solid cast… the play is highly engaging and memorable," gushed Charmaine Lim in The Straits Times.
Marcus Khoo of Honeycombers extended similar praise, "The musical is a delightful blend of humour and heart. There are laugh-out-loud moments that perfectly capture the awkwardness and anxieties of being a teenager. But beneath the comedic surface lies a touching portrayal of the unseen challenges faced by both students and teachers."
Based on weish's own experiences as a literature teacher, Secondary is a deeply moving dramedy that follows the faculty and students of the fictional Huxley Secondary School as they navigate the complexities and challenges of Singapore's education system.

When speaking to Hear65, weish shared that, "The process of writing, composing, and music directing was so joyful. Not without intense frustration and obstacles, but ultimately some of the best times of my life."
The consensus among attendees and the myriad of glowing reviews was that weish's phenomenal soundtrack was one the musical's most prominent highlights. And lucky for us, Secondary's original cast recording is now availalble to stream via Checkpoint Theatre's Spotify page. Listen to it below.
