This year, six artists will be conferred the Cultural Medallion and Young Artist Award (CMYAA) for their outstanding contributions to Singapore’s arts sector. Indian classical flautist Ghanavenothan Retnam and violinist Alan Choo took center stage at the ceremony held at National Gallery Singapore, graced by Guest-of-Honour President Tharman Shanmugaratnam.
Ghanavenothan Retnam, who will receive the prestigious Cultural Medallion, has been instrumental in elevating Indian classical music in Singapore, recognized for his mastery of the bansuri and cross-cultural collaborations. He also founded Singapore’s first Carnatic flute ensemble, marking a milestone in local music.
Alan Choo, a recipient of the Young Artist Award, has brought new dimensions to Singapore’s classical music scene as the founder of Red Dot Baroque, Singapore’s first professional Baroque ensemble. Internationally acclaimed, Choo serves as concertmaster of the Grammy-winning Apollo’s Fire, amplifying Singaporean talent globally.
Evan Low, also conferred the Young Artist Award, is celebrated for his pioneering music production and his role in mentoring young musicians. Alongside them, visual artist Siew Hock Meng will receive the Cultural Medallion, and filmmaker Tan Si En and printmaker Zhang Fuming will be honored with the Young Artist Award.
