weish's award-winning 'Secondary: The Musical' returns to the stage this April

After a landmark debut that left a deep impression on local theatre, Secondary: The Musical is returning to the stage. The acclaimed production runs from 9 – 26 April at Victoria Theatre, marking a highly anticipated restaging by Checkpoint Theatre.

Written, composed, and musically directed by weish, and helmed by director-dramaturg Huzir Sulaiman, Secondary: The Musical is a contemporary Singapore story rooted in empathy, humour, and lived experience. Drawing from weish’s background as a former secondary school teacher, the musical offers a clear-eyed look at life within the education system — one shaped by pressure, care, ambition, and quiet resilience.

Set in the fictional Huxley Secondary School, the story follows Lilin, a young teacher simply trying to survive one more school term. As students and educators navigate expectations both spoken and unspoken, the musical captures the emotional undercurrents of school life with warmth and sharp observation, balancing levity with moments of heartbreak and grace.

The 2026 restaging arrives on the back of significant critical recognition. Secondary: The Musical was named Production of the Year at the 2025 ST Life Theatre Awards and received six nominations overall, including Best Original Script for weish, Best Director for Huzir Sulaiman, Best Costume for Max Tan, and supporting performance nods for Teoh Jun Vinh and Rebekah Sangeetha Dorai. Critics praised it as a work of “breathtaking ambition” with a “stunning cast, script and music”.

The cast for the 2026 restaging include Genevieve Tan as Lilin, Rebekah Sangeetha Dorai as Mandy, Teoh Jun Vinh as Charlie, Tricia Tan as Ming, Ramzie Tahar as Omar, and Krish Natarajan as Reyansh, supported by an ensemble that brings the rhythms of school life vividly to the stage.

Selected performances during the run will feature understudy showcases on 14 April (8PM), 19 April (3PM), and 21 April (8PM), offering audiences a chance to see alternate interpretations of key roles. A special highlight of the season is an exclusive pre-show dialogue with weish on 15 April, Wednesday, from 7.15PM to 7.45PM. Open only to ticket holders of the 8PM performance that evening, the session will explore the creation of the music and world of Secondary: The Musical, followed by a Q&A.
